How to Choose an MSP for Your Law Firm

Ntiva’s CMMC Level 2 certification is the strongest compliance credential on this list. Verito’s SOC 2 Type II and dedicated infrastructure are also worth evaluating.

One thing that applies everywhere: ask any MSP for their ABA Rule 1.6 compliance documentation. If they can’t produce it or don’t know what you’re asking about, they’re not ready to serve a law firm. The ABA’s technology competence rules are enforceable in 42 states. Your IT provider needs to understand that. And check pricing models — the average data breach for professional services firms costs $4.56 million per IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report. The cheapest MSP is never the cheapest outcome.

Things Buyers Ask Before Choosing an MSP for Their Law Firm

Short answer: they understand privilege. A generalist MSP might be perfectly good at keeping your network running, but they won’t know what ethical walls are, why document retention policies matter for litigation holds, or how to configure Clio’s security settings to satisfy a malpractice insurer’s audit checklist. Legal MSPs build their entire support model around those realities.
$100 to $300 per user per month is the range you’ll see most often for full-service managed IT at a law firm. The low end covers basic helpdesk and monitoring. The high end includes cybersecurity, compliance documentation, vCIO services, and legal software support. Verito publishes pricing starting at $79/device/month for essentials. Cortavo offers flat-rate all-inclusive packages. Most others require a discovery call.

ABA Model Rule 1.6 requires attorneys to make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure of client information, and ABA Formal Opinions 477R and 483 explicitly extend that obligation to technology systems. If your MSP can’t produce documented encryption standards, access controls, and audit logs, they’re creating a compliance gap that lands on you, not them. 42 states have adopted the ABA’s technology competence requirement as of 2026.
Billing stops when systems go down. If your firm averages $250 per billable hour and three attorneys are offline, that’s $750 an hour in lost revenue before anyone even counts the disruption to deadlines. Expect a 15-minute initial response for critical issues and same-day resolution for non-critical tickets. Anything slower than that, and the MSP isn’t built for a legal environment where time literally equals money.

Most firms need both, and getting them from one provider eliminates the finger-pointing that happens when your hosting company and your IT company blame each other for a problem.
